Total runway accident costs exceed 6.5 Billion US dollar in 2016.
Runway accident costs
The total costs directly related to runway accidents and events that hampered runway operations have been estimated at 6.5 Billion$. The calculation model differentiates between aerodrome opportunity costs (265 Million$), Aircraft damage costs (2.7 Billion$), Aircraft operators delay and diversion costs (1.2 Billion $), Costs of injuries and fatalities (500 Million$) and Indirect safety costs (1.9 Billion $).
643 Runway occurrences with damage in 2016
The costs are the result of 643 runway related occurrences, either resulting in injuries, fatalities, damage to property or equipment and / or hampering normal operations.
Major conclusions
Aerodrome
Although 51% of all runway events occurred at municipal airports; the highest costs are related to Hub's (2.4 Billion $) and Regional airports (2.6 Billion $).
Aircraft Operator
Although 49% of all runway events are related to General Aviation, the highest costs, are related to Commercial Air Traffic with almost 3.8 Billion$; (GA 500 Million$).
Type of event
Runway Veer offs proved to be the most costly with over 2.3 Billion$, directly followed by "on runway events (e.g. gear collapse, on runway evacuation, etc.) 2.2 Billion$ and runway overruns 1.5 Billion$. Runway incursions and runway underruns showed almost negliable costs (200 Million $). 80% of the events are related to landing occurences.
Regions / Continents
Although most (reported) occurrences took place in North America, the highest costs are in the ASIA/ Pacific /Middle East region (3.6 Billion$). American continent accounts for 2.1 Billion$ , Europe 700 Million$ and Africa 230 Million$.
