Highest runway safety risks

Analysis of the major runway safety issues shows that runway excursions and especially runway veer offs are related to the highest costs. These account for $ 2 Billion dollar per year (figures corrected for local purchasing power).

40% of the costs are due to disabled aircraft on the runway. These are often related to gear malfunctions. Others include on runway evacuations or crashes on the runway ( e.g. EK 521 at Dubai 3 aug 2016). Runway excursions account for 61% of the costs, under-runs for 7%, whilst incursions only for 2%.

Within runway excursions are veer offs the most costly events. Almost twice the costs associated with runway overruns. Runway underruns seems to occur mainly with light aircraft, either returning due to technical failures or fuel related problems.
