Runway safety results 2019.
Safe-runway GmbH tracks the world-wide safety occurrences based on open source materials, which includes the ASN.
Instead of counting only the numbers of runway related incidents or accidents, are these expressed in Risk. Risks related to human life’s or injury, risks related to damage or property as well as the third-party risk. In order to objectively quantify risks are these expressed in costs. The calculation is based on a scientific publication and considers almost all variables, as well as local purchasing power effects.
Conclusions
The main four main conclusions for 2019 are:
The 2019 runway safety risks were the second highest over the past 5 years
2019 confirms the uptrend of runway risks
2019 confirms the steady increase of the runway overrun risk and the downtrend for undershoots (underruns), whilst the runway veer-off risk remains by far the highest.
2019 confirms the steady downtrend of these at Hub’s and a decline of the uptrend of runway occurrence risks of regional aerodrome.
Main conclusion:
Runway safety has improved at Hub aerodromes, whilst the overall runway safety risks show an increasing trend.
Overall
The results show that for 2019 the runway safety risks were the second highest over the past 5 years
5-year overall Trend
The initial runway risk downtrend was broken in 2018 and confirmed by 2019 as an uptrend.
Trends per runway safety category
2019 confirmed the steady increase of the runway overrun risk and a downtrend for undershoots (underruns), whilst the runway veer-off risk remains by far the highest.
Trends runway risk per type aerodrome
2019 showed a decline of the uptrend of runway occurrence risks of regional aerodromes and confirms the steady downtrend of these at Hub’s.
Runway accident costs show clear uptrend
After 10 months are the 2019 already higher than the totals of 2016 and 2017. We estimate that the 2019 costs will be about the same as 2018. A clear signal that the initial downtrend has been broken. Thus it can be concluded that all runaway safety measures are insufficient to compensate for aviation growth.
